Horsley
Lodge Golf Course was inspired by the late Bill White who suggested
to the owner of the land John Salt he should build a golf course here
in 1988. Its a place where everyone says hello and seems to be having
a nice time, contoured fairways neatly define each hole, the greens
firm and fashionably american were re-designed in 1999 by Britain's
Walker Cup captain and former World Champion, Peter McEvoy. The slopes
on the greens are big and tricky to read.It was the first USGA specification
18 hole course in The Midlands. Afterwards you will want to hang around
the clubhouse in the old manor house complete with bar and verandah.
"Mature
trees populate the fairways, the occasional weeping willow sweeps over
a dancefloor and ancient stone walls guard fairway landing points. Horsley
could easily be half a century older than its 20 years. But while many
a good tune can be played on an old fiddle, sometimes a more modern
upbeat tune is the order of the day" GOLF Magazine JUNE 2008

Expertly
molded into 168 acres of wonderful Derbyshire countryside, this
remains a thinking course where a variety of shot making skills
are necessary to arrive at a large green, where subtle undulations
provide the golfer with a further challenge. McEvoys design skills
have made it a wonderful golfing experience. It can be both easy
and difficult at the same time. Higher handicappers can club down,
heroes can go for it. Trees really define the holes now, and the
greens in 2009 are fast and true with meadow grass now being dominant
over the American grass used in the greens construction. |
