The
first newsletter from new Club Captain Andy Deane
Welcome...
The Drive-In and Annual Dinner Dance signalled the beginning of another
new season and Lady Captain, Junior Captain and I would like to wish
you all the best for the coming summer of golf.It is always difficult
for each new Captain to think of a new way of arriving for the Drive-In
and I hope all who attended were impressed by the colourful two wheeled
power which brought us up the drive!
The weather was traditionally cold and also, as seems to be another
tradition, the Junior Captain, Dean Hibbert, hit the longest, straightest
drive.
The Dinner Dance was a truly special event for me and was much
enjoyed by the full house who attended. I would like to thank all who
took the opportunity to wish me well for the coming season.
Improved
deal for Seniors.
At the March meeting the Men’s Committee agreed an improved set
of rules to promote golf for senior men.
Senior Golfing events are open to all male members aged 55 or over –
you don’t have to ‘join’ anything – it’s
an automatic entitlement.
The full document is available in the Information Room and is at the
end of the on-line version of this newsletter. A summary of the improvements
is as follows: -
• Formation of a senior section sub-committee within the structure
of the club
• Representation from a ‘senior’ member on:
o Handicap Committee
o Competition Committee
o Club Match Committee
• A programme of 16 official Club competitions for seniors to
take place throughout identified Tuesdays so that more seniors can take
part
• An official Grand Prix summer series to be recognised as a Major
Club Competition
• Programme of Senior’s Inter-Club Matches to be supported
by the club and the Club Match Secretary• Finances for senior
golf activities and competitions to be managed through and accounted
for by the Club Secretary/Treasurer
• The Tuesday morning pre-booked time slots for seniors will remain
so that ‘social’ golf and camaraderie can be maintained,
with entry on official senior competition days available through to
four hours before sunset.
The Men’s Committee were pleased to be able to present the document
to a number of seniors at a recent evening meeting. Comments since then
have shown that many were pleased to hear about the improvements direct
from the Club Captain and to have had the chance to ask questions rather
than rely on rumour and second hand information. I hope that this newsletter
encourages all seniors to read the full document. After all, we estimate
that there are well over 250 senior golfers at the club – all
of whom deserve the support of the Captain and the Committee.
Winter
Golf.
Fortunately the winter has been reasonably kind to golfers and the course
has rarely been closed due to bad weather. Again the use of mats has
helped protect the fairways – even though there has been a problem
with supply and demand. Next winter this will be solved when mats will
be on sale to members and it will be more feasible to implement the
‘no mat – no play’ rule.
The winter leagues have run smoothly and are now approaching the final
stages. Results will be posted in the Information Room. My thanks to
Ned Fahy from the Competitions Committee and to the Ladies Section who
have organised the men’s and mixed winter leagues.
Diaries
and events
By now all members should have their club diary and I very much hope
that you will enjoy the full programme of competitions and matches which
have been arranged.
Particular highlights for me will be Captain’s Day on July 13th
and my ‘Away Day’ on July 18th when we shall be visiting
Longcliffe Golf Club in Leicestershire. A notice is now up in the Information
Room – so please add your name and join me for a good day of golf.
In
the meantime I hope you continue to enjoy your golf and I look forward
to seeing you on the course or in the Clubhouse.
